CRCA Intro-to-Racing Clinics Continue to Draw New Racers

10562939_715082408528087_1951715225368613895_n CRCA's Intro to Racing Clinics have always been a great way for men and women to give bike racing a try. As this program has become more popular in recent years, with events near selling out, CRCA has decided to put on two sets of clinics in 2015 (Spring & Summer for both Men & Women).

Below is a recap of the Spring Women's Clinic by CRCA coach Tara Parsons, and the Spring Men's Clinic by first year racer, new CRCA member and Men's Spring Clinic participant, Val Petrov.

Spring Women's Clinic, April 25, 2015 - Tara Parsons, CRCA Coach

On an unexpectedly brisk spring morning, approximately 30 women showed up for the first of two women’s race clinics put on by CRCA. These clinics are designed for first time bike racers as well as women who may have done a race or two, but are really still trying to figure it all out.

After picking up numbers and getting them pinned on correctly (with some help), riders gathered for a pre-race safety and pep talk. CRCA coach Tara Parsons and CRCA life member and experienced racer, Nico Leon Moser, who was coaching the Men’s clinic, gave the debrief.

They discussed riding safely in a peloton, such as no sudden movements to slow down or move laterally, not overlapping wheels, and keeping your eyes up scanning the road and the other riders in front of you. They also discussed that it was important for each rider to make their own race, and try to be an active racer rather than a passive racer, even if you are not in the main field. Are there other riders nearby that you can get together with in order to work as a group and catch other riders? Don’t give up! You never know what has happened in front of you, and you could very well catch back up to the leaders. Remember, that if you are suffering, most likely other riders are too, and the pace will usually ease up. Try to push the little extra bit in order to stay with the group. It is always easier to ride with a group than by yourself.

They also primed riders on the importance of staying out of the runner’s lane, and how to safely neutralize in the event of another field passing. The experienced racers who were riding along with the clinics would also be able to assist and encourage new racers during their race. Having the experienced racers be a supportive element in the clinic is one of the most important aspects of the CRCA race clinics.

The group of women stayed together through the first climb of Harlem Hill, and then remained relatively steady through most of the first lap. Riders began to be active by attacking and trying to get away going into the second lap. These included attacks by Gwynna Smith, Lisa Hom and Jenny Lin. Kristen Pederson, Gwynna, Elena Stojanova, Kaley Bell, and Vanessa Nirode rode well, monitoring the front of the peloton, putting in strong pulls. Carla Clifford attacked on HH and got a gap. At first, it seemed like no one was going to chase, but then Kyra Wolf and Gwynna Smith worked to hunt her down, with Kyra getting up to her wheel. Gwynna was tenacious though, and continued her hard work at the front, with an attack that created a gap from the field and had her chasing alone. At that point Angela Taylor worked to bridge her way to Gwynna’s wheel, and the two of them traded pulls, closing the gap on the leaders. With one lap to go, Angela gapped Gwynna on Cat’s Paw hill, and almost bridged to the two breakaway companions who worked flawlessly together until the end of the race. Angela had some bad luck descending Harlem hill though, and dropped her chain. After some initial panic, Angela was able to pedal her chain back on with some coaching! This did not happen quickly enough and the field soon caught her, with Gwynna leading the charge. There were a few more attacks and attempts at re-shuffling, but the two ladies out front, Carla and Kyra, stayed away, with Carla taking the win, and Kyra coming in second. From the main field Gwynna, who had done so much work throughout the race, dug deep for one last effort and took the field sprint for 3rd, with Kaley Bell and Stephanie Henry rounding out the top 5. Further back in the race it was reported that riders worked well together trading pulls to put in strong finishes themselves. Great job to all the ladies!

Spring Men's Clinic April 25, 2015 - Val Petrov, Dave Jordan Racing Team

It's a nippy early morning in Central Park as I ride up to the registration line. The small area is packed with both familiar and new faces. Coach Tara and Nico round up the men and women's clinic participants just off the start line to give us our instructions. "Be safe, try different things and most of all enjoy yourselves". Got it, now let's race!

We all get rolling off the line, the pace quite civil, as we ride neutral till the top of Harlem Hill. My teammate, Adam is nowhere to be found, boxed in the sea of riders, no doubt. I keep the inside line as we approach Harlem Hill and keep towards the front on the descent. Coach gives the signal to race and we're off! The race gets underway and it's pretty clear everyone came with their game face on. We start to form a line as we traverse the west side sisters. The group waits to see who will make a move. I was lucky to have my teammate Adam in the group, so I stay towards the front but let the eager ones pull.

Once the first lap is over, I attacked on Harlem Hill on lap two to see who would chase and to set myself up for the sprint and pick up some extra prizes. It seems my attack works as we drop a few riders but I get caught before the transverse and I sit in to catch my breath. Near the boat house I decide to open up my sprint. I get caught out to my left by another rider and he takes the first prize. We sit up and wait for the field to catch us. It seems we have opened up quite the gap with 4 riders at this point. I try to organize our line so we can make the break stick but nobody is willing to pull so we get caught before Harlem Hill. I am content to sit in the field. As we approach 59th st we get neutralized by the passing B field with nearly a couple of turns left till the end.

I bide my time and jump on the pedals once we're clear. Adam, my teammate, reads the situation and catches up to me and pulls me to the bottom of cat's paw. 4 others and I open up to sprint. I'm giving it my all. I sense someone on my right but I manage to hold them out till the very last second, but get taken from the left. I come in 3rd. At this point I'm ready to lie down as we pull over and start walking back to the start. Well this was fun! When do we do this again!? (UPDATE: Val just got his Cat 4 upgrade!)

CRCA Board Minutes: 2015/27/5

CRCA Board Meeting Minutes May 27, 2015 at 7:15 PM 300 E. 85th St.

Present: Liz Marcello (president), Tomi Ketcham, Lisa Vandivort, Lucia Deng (by phone for first part), Ann Marie Miller, Randy Locklair, Matthew Vandivort, Ken, Edwards, Joe Grgic, and David Carr (secretary). Absent (because of sickness) Alexis Kraft.

Items discussed and voted

1) Brief OB/Bear recap, lessons learned: Joe/Matt/Liz

Overall, great feedback and successful! Things to think about for future-

Social media very successful (thanks to Randy and Lisa!), but might want to assign next year to a non-board member volunteer Work on more signage and other directions to make course clear If possible, more sweeps in advance of fields (police or cars) Possibly more water bottles for feed zone, depending on registration (ran out at end of race)

2) Membership check-in: Randy/Ken/Matt

Overall numbers are looking steady to good, with significant increase in new members, and slight increase over year-to-date overall membership numbers last year.

Randy is working on several options for more social events, and Liz is working with a club member on staging some CRCA happy hours

3) Open racing updates a) DJ CPC update: Joe/Matt/Liz – things are on track b) Remaining open races: Joe/Matt/Liz – board was updated on plans for late summer races

4) Quick Clinic Check-in: Lucia/Alexis/Ann Marie Lucia updated the board on preparations for the 2nd Intro. to Racing Info Clinic, scheduled for 7-9 PM on Monday, June 16 at the Rapha Cycle Club. Registration is good so far, and board members are encouraged to join.

5) Clarification of rule about non-affiliated riders wearing old sub-team kit?

Several complaints have been made about racers on former CRCA teams racing together in old subteam kit. In this way they form a functional team, while not having to follow CRCA subteam rules or do team duty for the club. For now, if the board receives complaints about specific riders racing together in old subteam kit, Alexis (with David’s help as needed) will communicate with these racers about the need to formalize their team relationship with the club.

6) Question of clarification about the CRCA club doping ban

Previously, the club did not allow members convicted of doping to rejoin the club until twice the time of their USADA doping suspension. At this meeting the board voted, starting in the 2016 racing season, to ban all racers who had been convicted of doping permanently from CRCA club membership.

7) Other CRCA to-dos: - The board discussed the possibility of an early Fall open board/town hall-style meeting, just before nominations and election of new board members. For further discussion. - The board supported Liz Marcello’s collaboration with NYCC on bike access to the George Washington Bridge but requested more information before the Club moves to make any public or official statements on the topic

-Liz is exploring ideas to set up a restricted fund in collaboration with the NYC Parks Department to be managed by the Club for the purpose of patching roads/potholes in NYC Parks that the Club uses for events. This will directly serve the Club’s mission but also has an added public service component. More updates will be provided following a few meetings that Liz has scheduled over the next few months.

-Joe suggested working with Liz Campbell (regional moto coordinator) to hold advanced moto training courses for NYC area moto pacers. Joe will explore this possibility in more detail and report back at the next meeting.

NYC Race Weekend Recap

Lake Tiorati (c) Marshall Kappel Coming off of an extraordinarily brutal and long Northeast winter, racers were understandably gun shy about registering early for races for fear of cold rain or freak spring snow storms. This had the CRCA Board sweating a bit as we anxiously tracked last year's reg. numbers vs. this year's for two of our blockbuster open races, Orchard Beach Crit and the Bear Mountain Classic. But, as the days grew warmer and the prizes (including a Dedacciai Strada frameset) and race support (SRAM Neutral Support, NYC Velo, Gorilla Cheese, Bicycle HabitatBEARnard Hinault) grew larger, we had a huge surge in race registration the week leading up to our NYC Race Weekend. Adding to the fanfare, was Rapha Cycling Club's sponsorship of Bear Mountain as well as NYSBRA's selection for our race to be the 2015 New York State Road Race Championships. A lot was on the line in one jam packed weekend.

Leading up to race weekend, intense preparations were under way, including one of our biggest hurdles to date: repairing the enormous potholes on the Orchard Beach Crit course! Safety for our racers being our highest concern (though equal to ensuring races don't get cancelled), we had to act fast and smart. Ultimately, through perseverance and savvy problem solving skills of our board members, we worked with the NYC Parks Department to smooth out our race course just in the nick of time.

With all that hard work, how did the weekend go?

We couldn't have asked for better weather for the weekend. We loved seeing so many smiling new and friendly faces greeting us at registration and throughout the day. Orchard Beach started out a bit chilly and misty, but turned into a full day of positive vibes and exciting racing. We were able to again bring in pizza to feed the crowd and we put on kids races to really make the event one that the whole family could enjoy. At Bear Mountain, we ran a full slate of NYS Road Race Championship fields in addition to several Juniors fields to give options for everyone. We were glad to be able to provide neutral water to our longer race waves in the hottest part of the day. We were also glad to see representatives from USADA perform random testing at Bear as part of the NYSBRA funded USAC Race Clean Program, a local anti-doping effort which CRCA supports.

Some of our Weekend Race Staff

Thank you's go out, first and foremost, to all the racers who came from near and far to support our little volunteer run non-profit operation. We are, and hope to always be, a group of racers putting on quality races that we would want to race. Huge thanks to all of our generous sponsors, local bike shop and food truck community - it's many of you who were a big part in getting us all started in cycling and keep us going on our bikes day to day. Thank you's go out to our fantastic USAC officials team, moto team, SRAM neutral support, Velocity Results (results here), and our race photographers - you all really elevate our races. And thanks to our members, marshals and other volunteers, without whom these races simply would not exist.

Well, don't just take our word for it. Check out our Facebook page for the voluminous collection of photos from our amazing community of local photographers, including our official race weekend photog, Anthony Benavides (Tone B).

And finally, we'll leave you with some sound bites from the best judges of race quality, the racers themselves.

"What a weekend of racing!! Thanks to CRCA for providing two fantastic and scenic venues to pedal around. Many thanks to your club members, volunteers, and officials for putting on such top notch weekend of racing. I truly appreciated the attention to the details that really made a big difference for the racers (SRAM support all weekend, neutral feeders, an omnium purse, Sprint/KOM/QOM competition, pizza, food trucks and great venues for the family. It's no small feat putting on such grand events, but know your efforts were appreciated. Returning to Bear Mountain brought back so many memories from my first years of racing (in the 90's) lots of suffering then and today. Familiar faces welcomed me and new faces challenged me. It was exciting to be spriting for the victory against women who were in their teens, 20's, 30's and two of us over 50. Being part of such a wonderful cycling community is what has kept my passion in the sport for all these years. Looking forward to returning next year. " - Laura Van Gilder, the winningest North American female road cyclist of all time.

"What a wonderful event! Our family and team had a fantastic day! The organizers, officials and volunteers were incredible! We will see you at the Dave Jordan race in a few weeks. Thanks for having a junior field at your events. " - Greg Cordasco, Liberty Cycle

CRCA Jr Development Team at Orchard Beach (c) Patrick Schnell

"Orchard beach, I describe this race to most of my friends, co-workers and family members as a race that most resembles, NASCAR. A nice fairly wide oval short track. Two turns, and one swooping corner. The sprint is over in a blink of an eye, this makes orchard beach fun and unique. After spending a week down south racing by myself, It was a complete honor and pleasure to return to New York City and race with my teammates by my side." - Donovan Clarke, Team Health Warrior p/b RK&O
"The Bear Mountain race was one of the best organized events that I have ever been to! Thanks so much for putting on a challenging and safe race!" - Rich S.

CRCA Racer (c) Anthony Benavides

"I was a little hesitant about this race after hearing about the crashes at the start of the race last year, but this year felt completely safe - the neutral start worked very well. I was excited to come out as this is one of the few rouleur's races - the climb is enough to drop the pure sprinters, but the flat/downhill finish makes a win tough for the pure climbers as well. The scenery was beautiful and the competition was tough which made for a great race." - Mike Heiss, Green Line Velo

GLV Racers at the start of the Elite Men's field at Bear (c) GLV

"I'm always more than willing to spend some time in the car to get to a race with a great course and a strong women's field. After having a great experience at the rebooted 2014 Bear, this race was on my 2015 calendar as soon as the date was announced. Having gotten my start racing in the CRCA, I know very well that CRCA-run races are well-produced by fellow racers and always attract the best female cyclists in the region. This year's edition was no exception - 5 laps of a challenging 14-mile circuit paired with a field of some of the most talented racers I know meant that all participants had to be on their A game! Before our car even left the parking lot en route back to Boston, we'd all agreed that Bear 2016 would make it on the calendar as well." - Meredith Uhl, Farm Team Elite

Bear Mountain Backdrop (c) Marshall Kappel

Thanks again, from the CRCA Board of Directors. See you all next year!
