Dave Jordan was an accomplished rider who shared his knowledge of the sport, passion for the camaraderie, competition, and thrill of the race with hundreds of athletes. Dave was a competitive, driven cyclist who stood on more than 200 podiums, and coached many others to similar success over his 20 year career. He was dedicated to bringing out the best in his team and known for believing in the potential for everyone to find their next level. Dave passed away from complications of a brain tumor in July 2012.

Dave started racing bicycles when he 11 years old. He began competing on bicycle motocross (BMX) bikes back in 1979 and entered road racing and multisport events in 1987. In that year he joined Century Road Club Cycling Association (CRCA) where he steadily improved his racing skills, progressing from a Category 4 racer to a Category 1 road racer and Category 2 track racer within a few years. He eventually won eight New York State Championships. He was a diverse and an exceptional all-around rider winning in events such as the Team Time Trial (TTT), Individual Time Trial, and Road Race, as well as track events like Points, Pursuit and Team Sprint competitions.

Dave Jordan – The Early Years In 2000 and 2001, at the Masters National Championships, David was a three-time medalist in Criterium, Points, and Pursuit. During his competitive racing days, David raced on more than a dozen race teams in the US and Europe. He represented the US National Cycling Team in Panama (1994) and twice in the Dominican Republic (1991, 1995), providing support for teammates that won stages and the General Classification. He also raced for elite amateur cycling clubs in Brussels, Belgium (1989) and Chalons-sur-Marne, France (1991).

Dave was an expert in bike fitting, performance testing, and coaching programs. As a cycling coach, he worked with top road, track, mountain, and triathlon professionals. Dave coached riders to Masters World and National Championships, to Collegiate National Championships (Western Washington University), and he helped local and regional racers to many victories and category upgrades. He coached both men’s and women’s teams and developed junior riders into accomplished racers. He coached Jill Kinter in her pursuit for National, World Championships and Olympic bronze medals in 2005 and 2006. Dave also coached and further developed the New York University (NYU) Cycling Program in seasons 2006 and 2007. Dave was also President of CRCA, the largest cycling club in the US and was bike consultant, along with Nate Loyal, on the feature film “Premium Rush”.

Among all of his accomplishments in cycling, Dave is remembered foremost as an incredible family man, loving husband to his wife Aytul, dedicated father to his children Isabel and Magnus, and great friend. Dave’s coaching knowledge, style, leadership and passion for the sport lives on through the efforts of his team, Dave Jordan Racing.

New Club Race Results Policy

As part of its ongoing efforts to improve Club Races, the CRCA Board is committed to accurate and timely reporting of results.  Therefore, for the remainder of the 2014 season, full field results will be posted to CRCA.net by midnight on the same day of the race. Following a vote of the Board of Directors, the following rules will also be in effect beginning at this Saturday's 5/24 Club Race:

1)  As is customary, top ten results for each field will be posted at the Rambles area of Central Park immediately following the race.  Top ten results are final per USAC's rules 15 minutes after they are posted for dispute.  If you believe you placed in the top ten, you should stay after the race to verify your result. If you are unable, please ask a teammate to stay for you.  Top ten results will not be changed following this dispute period, no matter what.

2) All other results may be disputed before midnight on Tuesday by email. All disputes will be considered on Wednesday and email confirmations will be sent out then.  Please note we will only consider disputes that are clearly a result of typos, transcription errors, or poorly-pinned bib numbers.

E.g., "I got 19th instead of 20th" is not a valid dispute, whereas "I did a very poor job of pinning my number. I think I am the unknown rider listed in 20th place.  I'll do a better job of pinning my number next time" is a valid dispute.

3) Only the finishline camera will be considered in resolving disputes. No other photos can be submitted.

Please note that, unlike professional results services, CRCA does not own an 8ft tripod for its finishline camera.  Your bib number should be pinned on your side rather than your back.  Ask a friend to be sure that your bib number is visible.

Any disputes, questions, or concerns should be sent to clubracing@crca.net.

Minutes of the April 29, 2014 CRCA Board Meeting

CRCA Board Meeting-MinutesDate: April 29, 2014, 7:15 pm Location: 115 W. 18th Street, NY, NY (office of Josh Sakofsky)

In attendance: Jayson Jacobs (president), Ken Edwards, Joe Grgic, Roger Parmelee, Josh Sakofsky, Ann Marie Miller, Liz Marcello, Ashley Doane, and David Carr

Club race issues

1) Marshaling

Speeding up check-in: It was resolved to try having the first two people to arrive for marshal check-in assigned to help facilitate the marshal check-in process. If after the check-in process there are already enough marshals on the course to run the race, these two people will be given leave to race or return home.

Whistle-blowing policy: It was resolved that marshals are to blow whistles until the front of the field reaches them. They are not to be asked to blow whistles while the field is passing them.

2) Other club racing issues

Report: VP of Racing, Elizabeth Marcello updated the board on a productive meeting that happened between 6 representatives of the parks department officials and herself, Jayson Jacobs, and Ken Edwards representing the CRCA. The atmosphere of the meeting was cordial and productive. The parks dept. representatives expressed openness to increasing the number of motos allowed for CRCA races, but we are still awaiting confirmation of that change. They also reviewed marshal locations and will send an updated document re. their expectations. For now we need to add a marshal on cedar hill and around cat's paw/rambles area after the races to ensure cyclists do not loiter in the recreation lane and/or ride on paths. We will ask one of our paid employees to take on this role.

Improving Results: Liz Marcello will contact Rob Rowan, a former coach for the Columbia University team and former USAC official to aid in producing results. The aim is to have the top ten results done at the park shortly after the race (with a formal protest period), and then a full list of results ready by a time that she will work out with him. The board discussed how to offset the extra cost of having this work done by Rob, including possibly slightly reducing the number of coaching sessions (which have not received the attendance hoped for, partly because of bad spring weather). The board will make a final determination on this after another month of warmer better weather and hopefully better attended sessions.

Club Race Direction: Liz will work with Alex on having a firmer registration closing time so that races start on time. Also, there have been some issues with Alex being able to launch fields on days when he needs to move quickly to another finish location. This may improve with Rob Rowan doing results. We will monitor and identify as a topic for board conversation at the next meeting.

Team and Boyd Points: Ashley will remind teams that they cannot collect team cup points and their riders cannot gain Boyd points when one of their riders is suspended.

Roster publication: Josh agreed to generate the roster on Thursday, and Barb will publish that roster on the website later Thursday or early Friday

Open Racing

The Board discussed how the end of year season party, and an award given there, may be an opportunity to further profile the contributions to the racing community by a sponsor. Josh will create a dropbox account for board documents, and one of the first items for it will be a contract for use with sponsors clarifying and firming up expectations. David will contact Rob about the plan for onside new member sign-up at Orchard and Bear

Broader Policy Issues

Clarification of policy re. team suspensions: the board confirmed the policy that racers on teams with three suspensions may not race, including not racing as unattached riders. The suspension issue must be resolved first. Teams cannot avoid this or other issues with suspended/double-suspended riders by midyear roster changes. Josh and David will update the relevant webpages.

Fixes of website r.e. donations and marshaling: the problems with the marshaling webpage must await the broader overhaul of the CRCA club database and website. Jayson will work on resolving the problems with the donation page.

Other items for later discussion: policy and enforcement r.e. club rider behavior outside park

NEXT MEETING: is scheduled for Tues. June 3, 7:15 PM at usual place

Longer Term Issues (postponed for next meeting)

13) (David) Club Archives - John Tomlinsen’s work on the CRCA archives - Budget for scanning photos (estimate $540) and storage for 10 bankers boxes (Museum? NY Public Library, the Museum of the City of New York, the New York Historical Society, and possibly Brooklyn College which holds a collection of material about boxing in New York City) 14) (David) Club involvement in advocacy re. planned GWB closure 15) (Liz) 2015 Board elections process suggestion

Lucarelli & Castaldi Bear Mountain Classic Race Predictions

With registration for the 2014 Lucarelli & Castaldi CRCA Bear Mountain Spring Classic (#bearmountainclassic) closing on Friday its time to break out the Road-Results.com race predictor. And remember if you want to partake in the action on Sunday, you must register in advance on Bikereg: https://www.bikereg.com/crca-bear-mountain-spring-classic2014

Elite Men's Championship

The Elite Men's Championship is going to be the big show on Sunday with a massive $4,000 prize pool. Since the prize list includes $1,000 for the Tiorati KOM and $1,000 for the Lake Welch Sprinters Competition it will be interesting to see which racers risk it all to go for the big KOM/Sprinters payday and which racers save it for the finale with the goal of being first across the line after 100 miles of racing on this challenging course.

First a quick run through who the computers say will take home the win...

The field is one of the strongest in recent memory, with Champion System - Stan's NoTubes making their presence known and taking both first and third in the predicted race results, with Gavriel Epstein and Conor Mullervy, respectively. With five riders in the race it will be interesting to see who Champion-System races for.

Slotted in between the Champion System duo is Adam Myerson (Team SmartStop) who showed his form just a few weeks ago at the Tour of the Battenkill and who benefits from plenty of prior racing experience on this classic course. One step off the podium in the predicted results is the very dangerous Bobby Lea (Pure Energy Cycling) who put on an incredible show at the 2012 Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic with an aggressive late race solo move.  Just behind Lea is Marcos Mazzola Lazzarotto (Kelly Benefit Strategies Elite) who benefits from bringing a full squad of racers to Bear Mountain.

With a race roster like this its going to be quite the show on Sunday, and its difficult to pick a favorite, but in this instance we're going to set aside the Road-Results predictions and go with two NYC riders who we think have the talent to take the win on their home turf - Evan Murphy (CRCA/Foundation) and Allan Rego (Champion System-Stan's NoTubes). While they slot in at 9th and 10th, respectively, in the computer's expected results, both have strong team support and we think one of them will take home the win on Sunday.

Elite Women's Championship

The women's field is looking stacked coming into this weekend, with a total of $2,000 of prize money to be distributed across just 33 riders. With this prize pool and this field it should be very exciting racing. Zimmer Capital p/b Foundation is sending a full squad and although Kathleen Lysakowski could very well win, as the Road-Results.com supercomputer predicts, we're actually putting our money on Beth Ruiz, who only slots in at 11th in the predicted results.. Road-Results has Lauren Dagostino (MidAtlantic Colavita Women's Team) in second and local NYC racer Raquel Miller, also from Zimmer Capital, in third. Fabienne Gerard of CRCA/e2Value could make things interesting as well and we'd be remiss not to highlight Emma White (Hot Tubes Junior Development Team) as another wild card.

Men's Category 2 Championship

While these racers were eligible for the Elite Men's Championship, they may have taken one look at that field roster and said "no thank you." And frankly with guys like Bobby Lea and Adam Myerson in that field we don't blame them. Much of the top 10 predicted results for the M2 Championship was present at Orchard Beach Crit last week, including very talented breakaway companions Jayson Jacobs (CRCA/Rapha) and Erik Post (CRCA/BH CC). While the pair are, if anything, more disposed to the tough course at Bear Mountain than the flat oval of Orchard Beach, they don't even crack the expected podium on Sunday.

Instead that honor goes to Ross Marklein of QCW Cycling pb Breakawaybikes.com who finished with a nice 5th place result in this same field at Grant's Tomb. He's followed up by local racer Everhard Paredes (USA Mengoni) and then Jeffrey Elie of CCB Racing.

For this race however we're going WAAAAAYYY down the expected results all the way to 25th for our pick, Evan Cooper (CRCA/BH-CC). We know from CRCA Club Races that Evan is on good form (at least when its not raining) and with his team's sprinter nowhere to be seen on the roster we think Evan will take advantage of the free reign and crack a nice result at one of the biggest races in the region.

Men's Category 3 Championship

In the Men's Category 3 Championship we have a top five littered with CRCA racers, including Jesse O'Donnell of CRCA/e2value, Chris Shaw of CRCA/FGX and David Taylor of CRCA/Eumaeus Asset Management. However at the top of the expected results is either an unattached rider or a rider who hasn't figured out how to put his team name in Bikereg, one Paskal Lamour.

Further down the list there are plenty of notable riders to choose from including Ryan McGarrity (CRCA/Sixcycle) who cracked a few results at the Bethel Spring Series and Scott Mills of CRCA/JLVeloNYC who has had a nice spring as well.

However we think these more sprint focused riders might struggle on the tough Bear Mountain course and so we're going to go way down the list, even further than in the M2 field, all the way to 72nd place for our pick - Alex Binkley of CRCA/JLVelo. While the super computers don't think too highly of his chances, we know he's a rider that's not afraid to take a chance in an early break, and this is just the type of course where that break can stick. So he gets our nod for Sunday.

Women's 3/4

Well, this is awkward. As the author of the women's portion of these predictions, I guess I might end up in sixth? At least according to the computer. How meta.

That said, this should also be a pretty competitive race. As of just a few hours ago Road-Results had Kristie Nichols (no team name shown) projected to win - it appears from internet stalking that she may race for QCW Cycling out of New Jersey and has been doing well this year so far. However in just a few hours, with women continuing to sign up (at the last minute!) the expected results have since changed with Masha Schneider (Zenberry) expected to take the win ahead of Jennifer Nordhem (CRCA/Stan's), followed by Nichols. Victoria Brumfield of CRCA/Radical Media is predicted for third. These are good bets in our opinion, although Jess Meany also from Stan's could start to show her form from last year and be a threat for the QOM if not the win.

Despite the supercomputer's expectations, however, we're going with an underdog - Liz Marcello (CRCA/Radical Media). While she only slots in at 17th in the predicted results, we're predicting that the fact that she ran around Orchard Beach endlessly for 12+ hours last weekend gave her the fitness boost required to do well at Bear Mountain (assuming she can avoid stopping mid-race to make sure marshals are doing their job).

Men's Category 4 Championship

The last of the men's field that we'll cover in our predictions features Jacek Boral from Incycle-predator expected to finish on the top step ahead of Vincent Lore of Bethel Cycle and Travis Dawson of Green Line Velo driven by ZipCar.  A bit further down the list is the 2014 Orchard Beach Crit M4 Champion, Colin Tanner of CRCA/Sixcylce-RK&O.

With a sold out field however it's tough to call a clear favorite but in the sentiment of underdog picks we're going to go with Will Carroll from CRCA/E2value who has had recent success in the CRCA Club Series.

Women's 4

This one is wide open especially considering that we just don't know who the latest phenom will be this year. Road-Results has Jodie Hein of CRCA/Breakaway Courier-NSX-Carve Systems taking the win, which is certainly possible! Hannah Todd of CRCA/Pink Rhino Racing is predicted for second, and Emily MacKinnon from Nantucket Velo is slated for third. It's anybody's race though.
